SHIPCOM AND LOCKHEED MARTIN’S SAVI TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES RFID & WIRELESS SOLUTION TO AUTOMATICALLY TRACK AND MANAGE SUPPLIES IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

RFID Provides Requisition-to-Rig Visibility of Assets and Shipments Moving through the Upstream Supply Chain

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.– November 5th, 2009 – Savi, a Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] company, has formed an Oil and Gas consortium with Shipcom Wireless and KBR Wireless. The group is offering a complete RFID & wireless solution that instantly tracks supplies and equipment transported between onshore and offshore oil and gas facilities globally.

By automating asset and shipment management in upstream operations, this new kind of solution can cut costs and improve efficiency by reducing rig downtime, enhancing asset utilization, automating manual processing activities, and reducing data errors, write-offs, shrinkage and theft. The wireless requisition-to-rig solution can also lower demurrage fees and rental costs associated with Cargo Carrying Units (CCUs); reduce “hot-shotting,” the costly airlifting of urgently needed supplies to onshore and offshore rigs; and, lead to improvements in security and regulatory compliance.

The solution developed by Savi and its partners uses enterprise-level software powered by real-time information from Savi active and KBR Wireless passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) hardware. The solution automatically tracks and manages supplies as they move from onshore operations facilities, to port transfer facilities, to offshore oil and gas rigs, and back. Typical supplies including critical consumables and equipment such as risers, choke valves, wire rope, stud tensioners, slings, wellheads, in addition to various containment units used to store and deliver material to the oil platforms.

"Already proven in the Chemical, Aerospace and Defense industries, the Savi SmartChain® platform now can go to work improving operational performance in the global Oil and Gas sector,´ said David Stephens, chief executive officer of Savi Technology. ´This is a powerhouse consortium with a rare combination of expertise in advanced wireless technology solutions and deep domain knowledge in solving the complex operational problems of the Oil and Gas industry."

"Our partnership with Savi and KBR Wireless unifies the most effective software and hardware technology platforms within the energy sector to address critical business needs of the industry. We will leverage Shipcom’s footprint of more than 100 successful deployments globally in energy, defense, and industrial processing, to drive an integrated offering that will revolutionize how the oil field does business", adds Abeezar Tyebji, CEO of Shipcom Wireless.

"Our unified technology solution addresses critical industry pain points where technologies such as GPS and bar code fall short,” adds Sam Falsafi Senior Principal of Oil & Gas practice of Shipcom Wireless & Co-Founder of the Oil & Gas RFID Solution Group. "We have built a vital tool that empowers the energy sector with an unprecedented level of visibility and control over their inventory and assets across their entire value chain.” The collaboration between Savi and its partners makes this solution unique, and offers users an integrated, complete solution. KBR Wireless passive RFID tags are affixed to consumables and assets, which are then loaded into CCUs tagged with Savi’s own active, battery-powered RFID tags. Savi’s fixed and mobile active RFID infrastructure collects tag data as the assets move through the supply chain to oil and gas rigs. Integrated Savi and Shipcom Wireless software processes and manages the RFID data, providing real-time visibility, and transforming the data into reports, analytics, automated alerts and other actionable knowledge on the location, condition and security of assets and shipments. With knowledge of CCU content, there is visibility into the container without breaching its security seal. This onboard data also provides the capability to integrate agnostically to the Homeland Security systems, since the entire manifest travels digitally with each container.
